1st July 1996 to 1st March 2006

During the early 90's the government considered a plan to bring in a fleet of double deck trains. These were to be called "4D" and built based on Sydney's Tangara design with major modifications to run on Melbourne's network. They brought in one 4 carraige prototype set which mostly ran revenue services on the Lilydale line. After a change of government the double deck idea was discarded and the remaining sets were never built. This one of a kind train continued to run on the Ringwood line into the Millenium failing countless times and became expensive to fix and retired around 2002. The 4D then spent the rest of its days in Newport workshops until it was scrapped in 2006. I was lucky enough to photograph this train on various occaisions and here is the collection I put together.
